Gothika

I thought that this movie would be utter trite, mostly because the name sucks COMPLETE ARSE. However, I got a freebie watch on Friday night and I would say is one of the better scary flicks I've seen in quite a long time (I'm a big horror/thriller fan, so that's saying quite a lot).

Also, judging by this review on CNN, I would hazard a guess and say that David Germain is not a fan of the genre and perhaps doesn't realise that most horror/thrillers released since the mid-90's are all terrible. I assure you, this is not a terrible movie.

He also says: "Gothika" leaves behind ludicrous loose ends in terms of who actually did what. This guy is an idiot! It was all obvious, and spelt out through plot and dialogue, and only an idiot wouldn't get it. He also said the girl on the bridge was mutilated, which she wasn't. Don't listen to this man!

Pros:

  • very tense and suspenseful
  • interesting storyline (not another fucking evil ghost story)
  • attractive actresses that look terrible (res-pect)
  • the mood of the film is great
  • didn't feel ripped off at the end (always a bonus!)

Cons:

  • American movie-goers leave their cellphones on especially in particuarly suspenseful scenes
  • American movie-goers scream like girls at jumpy events, and then laugh like idiots for the next 5 minutes
  • some of the dialogue was a bit rubbish, but it's not that bad
  • there are a couple of predictable plot turns and "scary" moments (mostly due to camera panning, but I guess they have to set the shot up somehow)

If you like scary movies, I suggest Gothika, even though the name really is shit.

Rating: 8/10 (thriller/horror movies only)
